Biographical history

Eva McKitrick was born in 1894 to Jane Timney and Austin Gordon McKitrick in Saddle Lake, Alberta. The family moved to Edmonton in 1906 and Eva attended McKay Avenue School. She graduated from the University of Alberta in 1922 and taught rural schools until the early 1940s when she returned to Edmonton.

Eva was widely recognized for her knowledge of Edmonton's history. She compiled an informative account of her family's experiences and she directed historical research for the Northern Alberta Pioneers and Old Timers Association, as well as serving on the Edmonton Historical Board. Eva was also an active member of the Knox Metropolitan United Church.

Eva McKitrick died 8 Dec 1993 in Edmonton.

Custodial history

Most accessions were received directly from Eva McKitrick. In 2000 the Edmonton Public Schools archive and museum transferred some materials they had received from Eva to the City of Edmonton. In 2020 the Kleskun Hill Museum Society transferred another set of Eva's records they had received from Betty Dunsford. It is unclear how Betty came in possession of Eva's records.

Scope and content

The collection consists of predominately published materials and photographs collected by Eva McKitrick between 1909 and 1990. The textual records relate to the history of Edmonton and Canada's Indigenous People, and were split into two series along these topics. The photographs predominately document the McKitrick family and their travels and work around Canada.
