Administrative history
The Edmonton Ladies Pharmaceutical Auxiliary began in 1956 when 80 women met at the King Edward Hotel in Edmonton for the inaugural meeting. The women at the meeting were wives of pharmacists in the Edmonton Druggist's Association. The Auxiliary aimed to raise money for philanthropic causes. Their first donation was $100 to send two children with diabetes to camp.
The Auxiliary had a wide range of fundraising initiatives including, luncheons, tea parties, bake sales, auctions, skits, dances, and fashion shows. One of their most notable events was their Poinsettia Ball which was held annually with proceeds going to a range of charitable organizations. Others included their annual Strawberry Tea/Pool Party and social gatherings in themed rooms at West Edmonton Mall. In 1984 they published a cookbook titled, “Potato! Potato! Potato!” with proceeds going towards the 1920 Fort Edmonton Drugstore at Fort Edmonton Park. In 1963, the Auxiliary began a bursary fund for 4th year students studying pharmacy and pharmaceutical sciences at the University of Alberta.
The Auxiliary also regularly invited guest speakers to educate themselves on various topics such as health, nutrition, business, and law. They also attended the Alberta Pharmaceutical Association conferences and conventions with their spouses.
For their service to the pharmaceutical profession, the Auxiliary was awarded a Certificate of Recognition from the Canadian Pharmacists Association and an Alberta Pharmacy Centennial Award of Distinction. After 50 years, the Auxiliary decided to dissolve and disband. The Pharmadel Wholesale Partnership continues to provide student bursaries in the name of the Auxiliary at the University of Alberta.
